Story Begins at
Psalm 148:5 Let them praise the name of the Lord! For he commanded and they were created. 그들로 주의 이름을 찬양케 할지니 이는 그가 명령하셨고 그들은 창조되었음이라.
Isaiah 43:7 everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made. 곧 내 이름으로 불려지는 모든 자 곧 내가 내 영광을 위하여 창조한 자를 오게 하라. 그를 내가 지었고, 그를 내가 만들었느니라.
The word in common between these two Bible verses is ‘created.’ In the Hebrew original, the word is ”בָּרָא” (S1254), the pronunciation is “ba-raw” and it is transliterated as Bârâʼ. This Hebrew word has many meanings, but when it is used to mean ‘created‘, ‘GOD’ is the only subject that can be used with it.
Studio Bârâ’ was founded in September 2025 with the goal of offering God-given talents to Him. The current members are musicians serving churches belonging to denominations such as the Presbyterian, Evangelical Holiness, and Methodist churches, and we plan to work with more musicians who love God in the future.
We’ve been contemplating chamber music since the early 2000s. While Korean chamber music has developed significantly since then, it’s rare to find a long-lasting chamber music group with a fixed lineup, like those in the US or Europe. This, we believe, is one of the most important elements of a chamber music group. And now, more than 20 years later, Studio Bârâ’ was founded based on the two Bible verses mentioned above, which were received through prayer by the musicians who participated in and witnessed numerous chamber music performances in Europe and the US.
Purpose of Establishment
Worship.
All sounds were created to praise God. Our musical talent isn’t the result of our own practice. God gave us musical talent as a means to express our love for Him, to reveal Him to the world. The reason why Korean classical music has lost its luster is because music has become a tool for musicians to gain recognition from people rather than from God. Studio Bârâʼ was founded to repent to God and to reestablish with God the essence of music creation.
Jesus’ first proclamation was a call to repentance.
Matthews 4:17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.
Because of this worship of repentance that we offer, we believe that Heaven will be at hand to us and to our audiences wherever we perform.
Holiness.
In the Bible, when God works through people, He always prepares them before they are sent, and He always accompanies them. For this purpose, He granted us, born in this end-time, musical talent to do things for His Kingdom and His will. Since God created us as Holy beings, He commanded us through the Bible to be Holy as His worshipers. We have never seen Holiness. However, He teaches us how to be Holy.
1 Timothy 4:5 for it is made holy by the word of God and prayer.
We cannot demonstrate Holiness to others because we cannot know what Holiness looks like. However, if our daily lives, our practices, and our performances begin and end with the Word and prayer, we believe that God’s Holiness will be heard by people, whether we know it or not. And we believe that this Holiness, which we cannot know, will be used for the sake of God’s kingdom according to His Holy will.
Life.
For spiritually dead musicians, no matter how beautiful the music they play, it is only death. The same goes for music that pretends to be alive.
“A person who dies as if he/she were asleep” and “a person who sleeps as if he/she is dead” may sound similar, but they are two completely different things. We, as musicians, must first live by rejoicing in God. We must first possess God’s vitality in our genes for our God and for our audience. We are not joyful because our moods, emotions, or circumstances are filled with joy, but only because of God. On difficult days, we comfort each other with God’s word and pray for one another. We always care about each other’s physical and spiritual recovery. We don’t play just for the audience. We believe that when we praise God together with our music, God will comfort us and the audience, and we will bear the fruit He desires.
Psalm 67:5-6 Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you! The earth has yielded its increase; God, our God, shall bless us.
Vision
Ensemble 지음 – Ensemble Jeeum
As part of Studio Bârâ’s plans to engage with audiences through solo and chamber music concerts and nurture the next generation of musicians through prayer and the Word, we have formed a chamber music group, “Ensemble 지음.” The two characters, 지음, would be written as ‘Jeeum’ in English. This word means ‘to make’, ‘to create.’ As mentioned earlier, musicians who know that all sounds should praise God gather together and approach every performance with a single heart of love for God. Through such concerts we anticipate what God will do.
The Bible testifies that when David praised God before Saul, all evil things left Saul (1 Samuel 16:23). David didn’t intend to please Saul, to show Saul how great a musician he was, or to oppose the evil that oppressed Saul. He simply sang to let God know that he loved Him. Praising God with all one’s heart, soul, and strength is already a victory in spiritual warfare even though it may sometimes seem like a crushing defeat to us or the world. Those who perform music should convey their love for God through their music. Then, I believe that God, in his righteousness, will accomplish what He desires.
Create a community of performers to live together in God
We preach God to musicians and teach them the purpose of music. We train them through the Word and prayer, so they no longer commit the sin of building the Tower of Babel — a monument to their own glory— in cramped practice rooms and/or on stage. Thus, we proclaim to the world that true performance is a worship service to God in spirit and truth.
Love God and love our neighbor.
Studio Bârâʼ goes ‘Amen’ only if God receives all the glory and if it can be used to expand the kingdom of God.
